A stone base that carries the load.
Installation of compacted crushed stone base for pavement, pavers, pads and slabs, with the right gradation, depth and compaction for the load.
- Material: Graded crushed stone
- Thickness: 4 to 12 in., set by load and soil
- Compaction: In lifts to density

What it is, and why it matters.
The stone base spreads the load from the surface to the soil and drains water away from the pavement. A good base uses graded crushed stone placed in layers, each compacted to density, over a stable subgrade. Skipping compaction or using the wrong stone leads to settling, ruts and cracks within a season or two.
In Nashville and across Tennessee, we choose the base material and thickness for the soil and the traffic, and we use geotextile fabric over soft clay when it helps. We compact in lifts, check density and grade and leave a firm, uniform platform. The result is pavement that stays smooth for years.

Stone Base Installation: common questions
How thick should a stone base be?
It depends on the soil and use. Residential driveways often use four to eight inches, heavier traffic needs more and pavers often call for six to twelve inches. We set the depth for your project.
What is geotextile fabric for?
Fabric separates the stone from soft soil so the base does not sink into it, and it adds stability on clay. We use it where it helps.
