Mill the worn surface. Overlay it new.
Grinding off the top layer of worn asphalt and paving a fresh surface, keeping grades and curb heights correct and removing the damage in one step.
- Depth: Typically 1 to 3 in. milled
- Grade: Kept the same as the existing
- Recycling: Millings often reused

What it is, and why it matters.
Milling removes the top inch or two of worn asphalt with a grinding machine, leaving a rough, even surface to pave over. It keeps the finished grade where it was, so curbs, drains and doorways do not end up too low, and it removes the cracked, oxidized material that would otherwise reflect through a new layer.
In Nashville and across Tennessee, milling and overlay is the standard way to renew roads, large lots and driveways when the base is good. We mill to the right depth, repair deeper failures, tack the surface and place new asphalt. The milled material can often be recycled, which saves cost and keeps it out of the landfill.

Milling and Overlay: common questions
What is the difference between milling and overlay and a plain overlay?
A plain overlay adds height. Milling first removes the damaged top layer so the new surface keeps the existing grade, which matters at curbs, gutters and doors.
Can milled asphalt be reused?
Yes. Recycled asphalt millings are commonly used in new mixes and as base or driveway material, depending on the project.
How do I get a price for milling and overlay?
