Can we pave today?
Guidance is based on commonly cited asphalt practice: hot mix goes down best at air and surface temperatures of about 50 degrees F and rising, and thin layers need more warmth. Monthly averages shown are typical for Nashville.
Dates also depend on whether your local asphalt plant is open, which varies by year and region. We confirm plant availability when we schedule.
Five rules of pavement and weather.
About 50 and rising
A commonly cited minimum for hot-mix, with thin layers needing more warmth.
Dry base, dry surface
Wet stone or rain ruins compaction and bonding.
Early starts in summer
Heat is workable, but fresh asphalt stays soft longer.
Plants set the season
Many Tennessee plants close for part of the winter.
Sealcoat needs 24 dry hours
And temperatures that stay above about 50 degrees.

How long before I can drive on new asphalt?
You can usually walk on fresh asphalt within hours and drive on it after about 24 to 72 hours, depending on the weather. Keep heavy vehicles off for several days and avoid sharp turning while the surface is warm.
When is the best time to pave in Tennessee?
Hot-mix paving is commonly done from spring through fall, when air and surface temperatures are about 50 degrees and rising and the base is dry. Many asphalt plants close for part of the winter. Our Paving Season Planner gives a quick go or wait check.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
Many asphalt driveways last 15 to 25 years or more with a good base, proper drainage and routine crack sealing and sealcoating. Water and a weak base shorten life far more than age alone.
