The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Every pavement starts with the dirt. We excavate to the planned depth, remove soft or organic soil, set the grade for drainage and proof-roll the subgrade so weak spots show up before the stone goes in. A few inches of grade error can mean a puddle that ruins an otherwise perfect surface.

In Nashville and across Tennessee, clay soils hold water and rock can appear unexpectedly, so careful site work saves surprises. We run laser or GPS-guided grading where it matters, protect drainage patterns, control erosion during construction and coordinate with other trades. Good grading is invisible when it is right and obvious when it is wrong.

Good questions

Excavation and Grading: common questions

Why is grading so important?

Pavement drains by its grade. Poor grading causes ponding, which weakens the base and shortens life. Correct grades are the cheapest insurance a project can have.

What happens if you hit rock?

We tell you right away, explain the options and price any extra work in writing before proceeding.
