The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Infrared repair uses a heater to warm the damaged pavement to a workable temperature without burning it. The softened asphalt is raked, new hot-mix is added and the whole patch is blended and compacted. Because the new and old asphalt fuse together, there is no cut line for water to find.

It works well for small areas such as potholes, utility cuts, birdbaths and edges in driveways and lots, and it avoids the saw cut and the cold joint of a traditional patch. In the Nashville area we use it when the base is sound and the damage is shallow, and we use traditional full-depth methods when the base has failed.

Good questions

Infrared Asphalt Repair: common questions

Is infrared repair as strong as a cut-out patch?

For shallow damage on a sound base, yes, and the fused joint is often better. For deep or base failures, a full-depth patch is the right fix.

Does infrared work in cold weather?

It can extend the repair season somewhat, but very cold or wet conditions still limit asphalt work. We tell you what is practical.
