A new asphalt driveway, built from the base up.
Complete driveway paving: layout, excavation, a compacted stone base, hot-mix asphalt laid at the right thickness, rolled tight and finished with clean edges.
- Typical thickness: 2 to 3 in. compacted asphalt
- Base: 4 to 8 in. compacted stone
- Typical job time: 1 to 2 days on site

What it is, and why it matters.
A driveway is only as good as what is under it. We lay out the shape with you, mark the grade so water runs off instead of pooling, excavate soft spots and build a compacted stone base before any asphalt arrives. Then hot-mix asphalt goes down in a uniform layer and is rolled while it is still hot, which is what gives a driveway its dense, smooth surface.
Middle Tennessee clay holds water and moves with the seasons, so base preparation and drainage matter more here than a thicker coat of asphalt on top. In Nashville and the surrounding cities we plan every new driveway around where the water will go, then finish with tidy edges that blend into your lawn and your street apron.

New Asphalt Driveways: common questions
How much does a new asphalt driveway cost?
Commonly published planning ranges run from roughly $4 to $9 per square foot installed for a new driveway, depending on the base work, access, thickness and drainage. A typical two-car drive often lands in the low to mid thousands. Our Asphalt Calculator gives a first estimate, and a free visit gives a written price.
How long before I can drive on it?
Most homeowners can walk on fresh asphalt within hours and drive on it after about 24 to 72 hours, depending on the weather. Keep heavy vehicles off for a few days and avoid sharp turning while the surface is still warm.
