A new surface over a sound base.
A fresh layer of hot-mix asphalt laid over a solid existing driveway, after repairs and tack coat, for a like-new look at a lower cost than replacement.
- Typical overlay: 1.5 to 2 in. of hot-mix
- Prep: Repairs, cleaning and tack coat
- Typical job time: About 1 day

What it is, and why it matters.
If the base under your driveway is still solid, an overlay can make it look and perform like new. We repair the bad spots first, clean the surface, apply a tack coat so the new layer bonds and then lay a fresh layer of hot-mix asphalt, typically 1.5 to 2 inches, rolled to a smooth, uniform finish.
Overlays work best when the problems are surface cracks, fading and light raveling rather than base failure. In the Nashville area a well-done overlay can add many years to a driveway for a fraction of the cost of replacement. We check the thickness and drainage before we recommend it, because an overlay over a failing base will not last.

Driveway Resurfacing and Overlay: common questions
Will cracks come back through an overlay?
Cracks in the old surface can eventually reflect through a thin overlay, which is why we repair and seal wide cracks first and recommend the right thickness. The result is usually a long-lasting, like-new surface.
How long does an overlay last?
A properly done overlay over a sound base commonly lasts many years, and often a decade or more with sealcoating and routine care.
